West Sumatera

Amidst lush, green forest, Minangkabau’s traditional houses with pointed roofs will catch the attention of visitors. The Minangkabau custom is as unique as their pointed roofs and colorful scraf embroidered in silver and gold thread. This is among outstanding features of West Sumatra Province.

The Minangkabau, as the people are called, adhere to Matrilineal custom whereby woman-folk own family property, women propose men for marriage and children are raised by uncles and aunties instead of parents, this is perhaps the only such custom remaining in the world today.

Apart from the capital city of Padang and Teluk Bayur harbor, Bukittinggi is West Sumatra’s most exciting city. Covering an area of 25.23 km and holding the population of 93.000, this lovely place lies 3,000 ft above sea level, overlooked by 3 dormant volcano peaks namely “ Tri Arga “.

It is not Minangkabau if things are not beautifully pointed like a Carabao’s horn, and even “ Jam Gadang “ or Big Clock Bukittinggi’s city landmark, is topped by pointed roofs.

The hot-spicy Padang food is not only famous nationwide, but also well known in neighboring Singapore and Malaysia. The enchanting panorama of Sianok Canyon and of Lake Maninjau are some of the things not to be missed in West Sumatra.
